Though its name means “Joyful Harbor” in Portuguese, the city of Porto Alegre is home to one of Brazil’s many favelas. According to a 2010 census, roughly 6 percent of Brazilians today live in a favela. Favelas are run by gangs who are very protective of who comes in and out of their place. In Capão da Canoa, we were able to go in with permissions of the Favela leaders and minister to the children. We brought them food and toys and shared the gospel!
